A computer that restarts over and over right after an update can turn a normal morning into a real problem. After several failed starts, Windows often opens Automatic Repair or the Recovery Environment. You may see options such as “Advanced options,” “Troubleshoot,” or “Startup Repair.” These tools are useful, but it is worth taking them in a careful order.
Start with Startup Repair. It attempts to correct common startup issues without asking you to erase personal files. It is not a guaranteed fix, but it is usually the least invasive option.
If Startup Repair does not work, return to Advanced options and look for Uninstall Updates. Windows may offer two choices: uninstall the latest quality update or uninstall the latest feature update. Try removing the latest quality update first. Quality updates are the smaller, routine patches most likely to have installed immediately before the problem began.
A feature update is a larger version change. Removing it can be appropriate when the timeline clearly matches, but it may not be available after a certain period. If you are unsure which update was installed, avoid guessing through every available option. A technician can review the system history and choose the least disruptive path.
Safe Mode can help pinpoint the problem
Safe Mode starts Windows with a limited set of drivers and services. If the computer starts successfully in Safe Mode but not normally, that is helpful information. It suggests a driver, startup app, security program, or recent software change may be involved.
From Recovery options, choose Startup Settings and restart. You can then select Safe Mode. Once the desktop appears, do not rush into deleting files or installing multiple “repair” programs. First, copy important files to a known-good external drive if possible. Then remove the most recent update, uninstall a recently added program if one was installed around the same time, or roll back a driver that changed shortly before the boot loop started.
Graphics, storage, Wi-Fi, and printer drivers are common suspects. Still, driver removal is not always the answer. If the drive is failing or Windows system files are damaged, the computer may need a more thorough repair than Safe Mode can provide.
Protect your data before choosing a reset
When a Windows update caused a boot loop, many people see the “Reset this PC” option and assume it is the fastest solution. It can be useful, but it should not be the first choice when important files are still on the computer.
The option to keep personal files may preserve documents and photos, but it removes installed apps and can still create complications if the Windows installation or storage drive is badly damaged. A full reset or reinstall can erase everything. If you do not have a current backup, data recovery should come before any erase-and-reinstall decision.
This is especially true if you notice warning signs beyond the update problem: clicking from a hard drive, extremely slow performance before the update, repeated blue screens, missing files, or messages about disk errors. Those signs can point to hardware trouble. Reinstalling Windows on a failing drive may temporarily change the symptoms while putting your data at greater risk.
A professional diagnostic can determine whether the issue is software-related, hardware-related, or both. That helps avoid paying for a reinstall when the real problem is a drive that needs replacement.
What not to do during a boot loop
A few common reactions can make a frustrating situation worse. Do not keep restarting the computer for hours hoping it will suddenly finish. Do not download random registry cleaners or “one-click fix” utilities from another device. And do not open the computer or remove its drive unless you are comfortable handling internal hardware and understand the risks.
Be cautious with online instructions that tell you to run advanced command-line repairs. Commands that rebuild boot records, edit partitions, or remove system files can be appropriate in specific cases, but they are not a universal fix. One incorrect command can make Windows less recoverable or complicate data recovery.
If this is a work computer, also consider whether it uses business encryption, a company login, or managed security tools. Making major changes without authorization can create access issues later. In that situation, contact the business owner or IT provider before resetting anything.
When it is time to bring in a technician
It is time for help when Startup Repair and update removal do not restore normal startup, when Safe Mode will not load, or when your files are too valuable to risk. The same applies if the PC is showing disk errors, blue-screen messages, BitLocker recovery prompts you cannot complete, or an update has left the machine stuck at a black screen.
